Recommended Texts for Winter Ango 2023
1) Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind – by Shunryu Suzuki
2) Dōgen’s Shōbōgenzō Zuimonki the New Annotated Edition by Shohaku Okumura
We will be using is “Dōgen’s Shōbōgenzō Zuimonki the new annotated edition” Okumura-roshi’s most recent translation edition (including Dogen’s waka poems) which is selling for $35 now many places. Okumura-roshi has based this new translation on a different Japanese source version of Zuimonki than the previous Zuimonki he translated in 1988, but the differences are not that great.
The 1988 version is available for a free download (pdf) on the Sotoshū website at (https://www.sotozen.com/eng/library/leaflet/Zuimonki/index.html). The text in both is very similar although the chapter order is slightly different. The new translation does contain new annotations.
We recommend the new edition if it can be afforded, but the free pdf should be sufficient.
